Sculpture Concept

sculpture by: Patrick Dougherty

Internationally acclaimed environmental artist Patrick Dougherty  created a site-specific sculpture over a three-week residency period (May 25-June 15) at Sculpture in the Parklands. Our local environment  inspired the sculptural installation and natural materials harvested from the area used in its creation.

Patrick states, “ I intend to build a walk through work which embodies momentum and the forces of nature. The sculpture will rise above the grove of Alder trees and will include hallways and swirling chambers. This will be one of my largest works to date.”

The artwork involved the help of 6 full-time local artists as well as community volunteers and the use of over 10 ton of willow. The site is open to the public and provides an opportunity for the community to experience the creativity and energy of this world-renowned artist.

The Crafts Council of Ireland and Offaly County Council Arts office sponsored Patrick Dougherty's three week residency at Sculpture in the Parklands. The Crafts Council of Ireland also hosted a one week primary education programme during Patrick's residency.
